Suicide is the leading cause of injury-related deaths in America, having surpassed car accidents to take the top spot, according to new research from the National Center for Health Statistics. The study found that from 2000 to 2009, the suicide death rate increased 15 percent, while car crash deaths decreased by 25 percent. Researchers suggest improved traffic safety measures might be responsible for the latter's decline. Additionally, they feel similar attention and resources should be provided to prevent suicides. Death by unintentional poisoning, which includes drug overdoses, came in third after increasing 128 percent from 2000 to 2009. Prescription painkiller overdoses might be behind this rise. (NBC News)
