Teen Unemployment On The Rise
Part-time jobs are going to older people now
There was a time when you could tell a lazy, wayward youth to straighten up and get a job, and they'd find one. But in 2012, it's not that easy.
According to CBN, teen unemployment is currently at 26%, a 10% hike from where it was 10 years ago.
With the general unemployment rate at 8.5%, many of the part-time and odd jobs that would usually go to teens, are being snatched up by adults in need of income. While the idea of work is important for idle minded teens, this stands to have a greater impact in terms of teens not getting early work experience under their belts.
Hoping to end the trend, President Obama has announced a new initiate called Summer Jobs+ where he hopes to create 250,000 employment opportunities for low income youths in 2012.
