True statements must be used in new ads
A judge has ordered major tobacco companies to admit that they've lied to the public about the dangers of cigarettes. U.S. district judge Gladys Kessler additionally ruled that the companies must spend their own money on the public advertising campaign admitting deception. The advertisements are to be published in various media for up to two years. The ruling aims to finalize the requirement of statements the companies must begin to use, including, "Smoking kills, on average, 1,200 Americans. Every day." Ellen Vargyas, general counsel for the American Legacy Foundation said, "These statements do exactly what they should do. They're clear, to the point, easy to understand, no legalese, no scientific jargon, just the facts." (The Guardian)
