Trayvon Martin’s Mother Calls for ‘Stand Your Ground’ Repeal

Democratic lawmakers are standing with slain teen’s family as shooter trial grow nearer
Sybrina Fulton, the mother of Trayvon Martin, and Democratic lawmakers in Florida on Wednesday called for the repeal of the state’s “stand your ground” law. Fulton joined state Rep. Alan Williams and state Sen. Dwight Bullard in calling for action. Williams has filed a bill to repeal the law, given that a panel created by Republican Gov. Rick Scott to examine it recommended no major changes. The repeal bill, however, is unlikely to go anywhere in the state’s Legislature, the Associated Press reports. Martin was a 17-year-old old high school junior fatally shot by neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman last year. Zimmerman’s trial for second-degree murder is set to begin later this year. He has pleaded not guilty and claimed self-defense. If that claim is proven, the “stand your ground” law would absolve him from prosecution. (AP)
