New projections confirming whites won’t have a majority in three decades
Just like some tried to bury the “n-word” in the early aughts, it may be time to rethink the word “minority” as a way to describe racial and ethnic groups in the U.S. According to new Census Bureau projections released Wednesday, no racial or ethnic group will constitute a majority of children under 18. And in three decades, whites will not make up a majority of the country as a whole. Census officials will be calling America a “plurality nation.” Hispanics are expected to more than double their population by 2060, to 128.8 million from 53.3 now. Asians are expected to do about the same, to 34.4 million from 15.9 now. Blacks are expected to increase to 61.8 million from 41.2 million. (New York Times)
