The supermarket's resort hopes to expand from Texas
Whole Foods is planning to open an upscale health resort where guests can stay and learn about a healthier lifestyle. The resort will likely open within the next three years in or near downtown Austin, Tx. where the Whole Foods headquarters is located. "Think of it as a center where people would go for a day, a weekend or a week for healthy lifestyle education," said co-founder John Mackey. The company is currently searching for the right hotel chain to operate the health resort and negotiating for real estate. The idea came from an in-house program that aimed to improve eating and lifestyle habits of Whole Foods employees -- focused on weight loss and lowering blood pressure and cholesterol. Now, Mackey wants to spread the concept beyond staff. "It's an experiment, and you never know if experiments will be successful or not," he said. (USA Today)
