Another Shot For Gay Athlete
Will gay athletes now be scrutinized for merit or lifestyle?
“I wish you guys would see me as Michael Sam the football player instead of Michael Sam the gay football player,” said the NFL prospect at his first news conference as an openly gay man. Hopefully his message was clear, and the sports world embraces him a lot quicker than they have Jason Collins who as of last night debuted his return to the game he loves so much defeating the Lakers by six. I must say kudos to the Brooklyn Nets for signing the first openly gay basketball player.
Perhaps, this is a first step to a whole new movement in sports; in every division. However, will Collins be watched solely on how he keeps up on the court, or for his gay lifestyle? While the only real factor is whether or not he can still play, the truth of the matter is people are watching…from every angle. His ‘coming out’ did land him on the cover of Sports Illustrated, and there’s no telling the amount of media attention the Nets will receive now. But in all, it doesn’t take away from the game…right?
