Can Reading More Let You Read People Better?
Who knew Harry Potter would be so handy?
We all know that reading has some pretty good benefits. Not only does reading serve our brains, help our writing skills, teach us how to think critically, and understand rhetoric, but it also allows us the opportunity to create imaginary worlds to escape to.
Now, some are saying that books are doing even more than that. In addition, books are able to enhance our “theory of mind.” In other words, it’s increasing our ability to read other people.
Not only are avid readers of fiction able to determine the next move of somebody, but they also tend to be more empathetic.
Still, the results don’t necessarily mean “Fifty Shades of Grey” will allow you to read real-life Christian Grey’s mind. On the other hand, reading every Jane Austen novel won’t necessarily do so either. Ultimately, it depends on what you like and how you react to the text.
