What Your Aging Parents Need You To Know
4 secrets mom and dad may want to get off their chest as they get older
Your parents are getting older, and they’re ready to disclose a few secrets, but don’t worry there’s no need to be frightened…yet. Simply, listen with a good ear and an open mind, and who knows, you may even leave the conversation closer than before. Here are four things your parents might disclose to you as they get older:
FOUR: “Your brother was actually my favorite”—I know this can seem like a tough pill to swallow, but relax, it doesn’t mean that they loved you any less. It’s common for parents to feel differently towards each of their children. Little Johnny just may have been cooler than you (just kidding)!
THREE: “We would have gotten a divorce if it wasn’t for you and your brother”—This one may sting a bit, but at least they’re being honest. Unfortunately, too many marriages end in divorce and chances are your parents were unhappy at some point. Before no-fault divorce laws, couples were forced to stick it out, but they’re happy now and that’s all that matters, right?
TWO: “I still worry about you”—Rightfully so, they’re your parents and no matter how old you get, you will always (secretly) be their baby. Although you may not want them to, they will worry anyway. Besides, it can be viewed as a sign of love.
ONE: “I miss sex!”—Don’t cringe; you’ll be saying the same thing in years to come. Touch is a basic human need, and if your parent is a widow or a divorcee, they could be expressing signs of loneliness.
