Reel Deal: Weekend at the Cinema with Bad Grandpa
Paramount's new 'Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa' released and wowed box offices at $32 million.
Bad Grandpa is the second highest debut in the series of Jackass films, just behind the $50 million debut of Jackass 3D three years back. The spin-off show isn't a direct sequel, and it's also not showing in 3D.
Despite having been surrounded by adult-centric, intelligent films such as Gravity, Rush, Prisoners, 12 Years a Slave, and Captain Phillips, the politically-incorrect comedy, Bad Grandpa, still topped the weekend sales.
The Counselor was another film to release over the weekend. This crime thriller brought in $8 million. Gravity held its ground four weeks post-release at $20.3 million in weekend sales, now totaling $199.8 million. Captain Phillips, three weeks post-release, brought in $11.8 million.
12 Years a Slave expanded to 123 show locations over the weekend, bringing in another $2.1 million while still not released nationwide-- it will officially release to all theaters next weekend.
Although it's a challenging film to sit through, 12 Years a Slave is a heart wrenching, yet phenomenal, poetic and profound adaptation of the memoir. We highly recommended bringing tissues. The brilliantly executed movie is sure to bring in a few Oscars.
