Colin Powell Says GOP Has To Get Rid of Its Racists

Former Secretary of State confirms he is still a card-carrying Republican

Colin Powell is a life-long Republican but, in a Sunday interview on NBC’s “Meet The Press,” the former secretary of state says changes in the party’s racially insensitive tone and ideas has driven him to vote Democratic in the last two presidential elections. Powell, who twice endorsed Democrat Barack Obama for president, said the party has “a dark vein of intolerance” within its ranks. He added that “a significant shift to the right” has stifled the party’s ability to build a broader, diverse coalition of voters. See video of his race remarks in the clip above.
