Court Rules Texas Can Cut Off Planned Parenthood Funds

State lawmakers passed a measure to halt money to abortion service providers
Texas official are not free to impose a ban on funding to Planned Parenthood, after a federal judge sided with state lawmakers on a law banning funding for abortion providers that receive Medicaid dollars. The 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans on late Tuesday reversed an injunction that was allowing funding to continue. Planned Parenthood, which will challenge the law during an October trial, provides cancer screenings – not abortions – to about half of the 130,000 low-income Texas women enrolled in the state’s health program. Republican Gov. Rick Perry has promised the state will make up for the loss of federal funds to keep the state’s health program for women going without Planned Parenthood’s involvement.
