After voter suppression controversy last election, Rick Scott offers fixes
It’s been two months since eyes were trained on Florida and other states, where voting rights advocates say coordinated efforts made it difficult for minorities and the elderly to cast ballots. On Thursday, Florida Gov. Rick Scott endorsed three changes to state’s voting regulation. Scott, by suggestion of the state’s election supervisors, supports increasing the number of early voting days. That includes adding back voting on the Sunday before Election Day, increasing the range of polling places, and making ballots shorter. This would reverse changes by the state’s Republican-controlled Legislature in 2011. “I want to ensure we do whatever possible to improve our election system from the statewide level,” Scott said in a statement.
