Rep. Frederica Wilson: We Must Have Obama's Back

Congresswoman stresses the importance of the Black vote in 2012

The Republicans in Congress have had one goal since that historic day on January 20, 2009 – to make Barack Obama a one-term president. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell even said so publicly on TV!

Since the Republicans won the majority of the U.S. House of Representatives, they have opposed President Obama at every turn.  When it comes time to vote, they don’t even read the bill they’re voting on.  If President Obama is for it, they’re against it.

In the U.S. Senate, over the past three-and-half years, the Republicans have been abusing the filibuster to block every bill that would create jobs and help jump-start the economy.

Now, we know how important it is to vote for President Obama in November. Record turnout in our community made him President in 2008. This year, our votes will be as important as ever – but we must remember to vote all the way down the ballot to elect Senators, Representatives, state legislators, judges and prosecutors who will have President Obama’s back.

The most recent example of why we need to have President Obama’s back is the Affordable Care Act, aka Obamacare.

The term Obamacare was coined by the Republicans to mock the wonderful Affordable Care Act passed by Congress in 2010 and signed into law by President Obama.

Obamacare is an idea that has been supported by Republicans in the past – when it was known as Romneycare. But because it was proposed by President Obama, Republicans in Congress lined up against it.

The recent Supreme Court decision proves that Obamacare was the perfect nickname because President Obama cares.

He cares about you, he cares about me, he cares about my friends on the Democratic side of the aisle, and he cares about my friends on the Republican side of the aisle. He cares about all Americans. President Obama cares about us, and he thinks that we should not have to worry about going broke just because someone in our family gets sick.

Because Obama cares, every American has the right to affordable healthcare.
