Progress: House GOP Might Help Renew Violence Against Women Act, Too
2 months ago
GOP version of the bill will be taken up, before Senate Dems’ version
Looks like House Republicans gained a bit of sense on domestic abuse. Or they've simply bowed to pressure from women in their own party and cleared a path for a Thursday vote on the Senate’s bipartisan bill reauthorizing the Violence Against Women Act. But first, conservatives in the House want to consider a bill that does everything the Senate bill does, expect fund domestic violence programs that protect victims in same-sex relationships. If that version fails, the House will take up the Senate-passed version. That’s actually the most likely outcome. The Senate passed its version earlier this month. VAWA was signed into law by President Bill Clinton in 1994, funds much needed programs and resources for women (and men) whose livelihoods are altered by domestic abuse, sexual assault and stalking.
