At annual gathering of mayors, leaders share the anguish of daily gun violence
At the United State Conference of Mayors gathering on Thursday, leaders said they were mostly supportive of the measures announced by President Barack Obama to stem the gun violence plaguing many of their cities and towns. Led by Mayor Michael Nutter of Philadelphia, the president of the conference, mayors shared the bad feelings they get each time they learn of another shooting or homicide in their city. “It may be the life of a child. A police officer. A young black man. A young woman. It could be anyone in our cities,” Nutter said at the conference. “But it’s the mayor who visits the family members who have had their hearts torn out, and the mayor who attends funeral after funeral after funeral.” Not everyone endorsed the Obama gun measures. Republicans mayors said they didn’t believe the presidential actions would resolve the problems gun control advocates are trying to resolve. The gathered mayors gave a standing ovation to the conference's keynote speaker, Vice President Joe Biden, who praised attendees for years of work on gun issues. (New York Times)
