The first lady opens up in sentimental letter, affirming the nation grieves with the families

A week after the mass shooting that took place at Sandy Hook Elementary School, first lady Michelle Obama wrote an open letter to the families of Newtown, Conn. In it, she spoke of the grief the country was sharing with them and how she hoped to assure them that the administration will do all they can to “prevent tragedies like this one” in the future. “As the mother of two young daughters, my heart aches for you and your families,” she wrote. “Like so many Americans, I wish there were something — anything — I could do or say to ease your anguish.” As funerals continue for all those killed in the tragedy -- 20 children, 6 educators and the gunman's mother -- President Barack Obama joined the nation in a moment of silence for the victims Friday morning. He also released a video addressing gun control advocates, saying, “We hear you,” and vowing to take prompt action. (Hartford (Conn.) Courant)
