We Can Do Better: No Assault Weapons Ban In Senate Dems Bill
2 months ago
Momentum behind gun law reform seems lost after latest blow to agenda
Sen. Dianne Feinstein is livid. And once word gets back to President Obama, he won’t be impressed either. Despite the fact that Democrats control the U.S. Senate, an assault weapons ban won’t be in the gun-control legislation that the liberals will bring to the senate floor next month. Obama and others wanted to see military-style rifles banned (again), because those weapons had been used in at least two of the mass casualty shootings reported in the last year. This failure is happening just months after the December school massacre in Connecticut and the movie theater shooting in Colorado. What’s saddest is a complete rejection of the ban would be a major victory for the National Rifle Association, which drew a considerable amount of public rebuke for its reaction to the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting. Feinstein, a California Democrat and the primary sponsor on the ban, said she deeply regrets the choice made by Majority Leader Harry Reid to kill the ban. Reid reasons that no gun control measure would pass with a weapons ban in it. “I tried my best,” Feinstein said Tuesday. “But my best, I guess, wasn’t good enough.” You don’t say, senator!
