NYC Mother Sues City For $900 Trillion

Says she's suffered distress since her kids were taken away

The U.S. national debt is $15 trillion but that doesn't mean a hill of beans to Staten Island's Fausat Ogunbayo. The 46-year old mother of two had her kids taken away in 2008 after courts deemed her an unfit mother. She claims that the action has brought her and her family "over three years of terror, horror, grievous harm, time lost, substantial economic hardship and injuries."

For her troubles, Ogunbayo is suing New York City for {Dr. Evil pinky to mouth} $900,000,000,000,000!

Also of note, Ogunbayo is said to suffer from mental illness. Court documents say that she would leave her two boys alone at home for several hours and received many complaints from neighbors over it. She also reportedly suffered hallucinations and once told police that her skin gets darker by the day and that the FBI were out to get her children. The boys, ages 10 and 12 have both been relocated to Queens, New York.

In her defense, the brothers were both in perfect physical shape and had perfect attendance at school while living with their mother. Ogunbayo says that since they have been removed their school attendance has slacked and one of them has been arrested for possession of weed.

She is also representing herself in court.

“Laws require states to put in place preventive services in an effort to avoid removing children from their families, but if those preventive services are not working as a first-level intervention, they have to be concerned about the safety of the children,” says Alma Carten, associate professor of social work at New York University. “Mentally ill people do have children and there is an issue of social justice and civil rights here that must be acknowledged.”
