Just four days to go before nation at risk of going back into recession
President Barack Obama on Friday will meet with top member of Congress in the hopes that they will carve out a deal to avert the fiscal cliff, which would amount to massive government spending cuts and tax increases on all Americans. Although there were no signs that final legislation was taking shape, neither the White House nor Congressional Republicans want appear passive about the possibility that no deal might send the nation back into recession. The meeting with Obama is set for Friday afternoon at the White House. Attendees include House Speaker John Boehner, Majority Leader Eric Cantor, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid and Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell. All sides seem to agree that raising taxes on the wealthy will be a part of the deal, but they do not agree on who will be considered wealthy, as well as a number of other measures needed to put the country on sound fiscal footing.
