In annual pre-Super Bowl interview, president stands up for LGBT scouts
Have any doubts that President Barack Obama is a man of his word on his support of gay rights? On Sunday, in his annual pre-Super Bowl interview, Obama encouraged the Boy Scouts of America to end its ban on gay members and leaders. “My attitude is … that gays and lesbians should have access and opportunity the same way everybody else does, in every institution and walk of life,” the president told CBS anchor Scott Pelley. In a few days, the Boy Scouts national leadership is expected to vote on ending the controversial and long-standing rule. Since coming in to office, Obama famously came out in favor of gay marriage and presided over the ending of the U.S. military’s ban on gays soldiers. He also stopped his administration’s support of the Defense of Marriage Act, which forbade gay married couples from government benefits enjoyed by straight couples. (Associated Press)
