Obama Unveiling Gun Violence Measures in White House Event

Children who wrote president about gun violence will flank president during announcement
President Barack Obama on Wednesday will unveil his broad effort to reduce gun violence, in an event that will include children who wrote the president about guns after last month’s shooting at a Newtown, Conn. elementary school. The proposed gun control measures are said to include bans on military-style assault weapons, restrictions on high capacity ammunition clips and universal background checks for gun purchasers. Obama is also expected to detail more than a dozen executive orders that he could take without congressional opposition. Some gun control advocates worry that opposition from Republicans and conservative Democrats, as well as the all-powerful National Rifle Association, will stifle Obama’s gun violence reduction efforts. The NRA has already released a TV ad critical of Obama’s rejection of its proposal to put armed guards in every American school. (Associated Press)
