Progress: Republicans Sign Supreme Court Brief In Support of Gay Marriage
2 months ago
Dozens of high profile members of GOP signed legal briefs for marriage equality
One way or another, Republicans are intent on not losing another presidential election and on gaining control of both legislative bodies. So it’s no surprise that several prominent members of the GOP -- in a thinly veiled attempt to change the image of the party -- have signed a legal brief arguing that gays and lesbians should have the constitutional right to marry. The list of 75 GOP signers, as of Monday, include top advisers to former President George W. Bush, four former governors and two members of Congress. The “amicus brief” will be submitted this week to the Supreme Court, ahead of next month’s arguments to uphold or strike down California’s voter-approved ban on same-sex marriage. The court will also hear arguments on the federal Defense of Marriage Act. Legal analysts say the brief has the potential to sway conservative justices. (New York Times)
