Congress’ crack at a new ban leaves deadliest weapons untouched

Get serious, Congress! Or start learning how to say “no” to the NRA lobbyists! Lawmakers latest attempt at reinstituting a ban on assault weapons would actually protect more than 2,200 specific weapons. One of the protected rifle models, similar to the Ruger .223 caliber Mini-14 (pictured), was used in the bloodiest shootout in FBI history. The gun is on the list in legislation the Senate is considering. Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., has introduced a bill that would ban 157 specific military- and police-style firearms, as well as ban gun clips that hold more than 10 rounds. Feinstein told The Associated Press that the list of 2,200 protected weapons is supposed to “make crystal clear” that her bill would not affect hunting and sporting weapons. “What a joke,” said former FBI agent John Hanlon, who survived the 1986 Miami bank robbery shootout in which a protected rifle was used.
