Rick Perry Gets Voting Age Wrong

While talking to college students the governor misspeakes

Rick Perry’s campaign theme song should be “Oops I Did it Again,” as he keeps giving the public much reason to knock him out of the GOP presidential race.

At a town meeting on Tuesday at Saint Anselm college in New Hampshire, Perry asked that all the college students in the crowd who will be 21 by Election Day vote for him.

It turns out that Perry had forgotten, or maybe just didn’t know, that the voting age in America is 18—has been for 40 years.

Said Perry: “Those who are going to be over 21 on November 12th, I ask for your support. Those who won’t be, just work hard. Because you’re... counting on us.”

Perry’s comments elicited a few chuckles from the crowd. After the event, Perry’s spokesman Mark Miner said simply “the governor misspoke.”

Perry’s ratings have yet to recover from a series of lackluster debate performances and “misspoken” fumbles—the most memorable being the “oops” moment during a debate when Perry forgot the third government department he would eliminate as president.
