Political pressure said to be weighing heavily on senior officials
The White House is reportedly readying strike forces and drones for a forceful response to the Sept. 11 attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya. The strike would come with a high risk. Official say the Obama administration has to weigh whether getting revenge on al-Qaida is worth elevating the group’s profile in the region, alienating governments the U.S. needs in the future and quickening a growing terror threat in North Africa. The details of the White House’s points of consideration were given to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity, as the officials who spoke were not authorized to do so. The U.S. Consulate attack killed U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens and three others. (AP)
