No Mexican Gardners on Hulu's New Show
Hulu debuts its first all Latino cast series.
Time after time, Latinos are endlessly portrayed as gang bangers or inmates on television and film. They are also the people we see playing maids and gardeners.
But you won’t see any of that in the new Hulu exclusive drama series “East Los High,” which premiered on June 3. This is the first show on Hulu to cast an all Latino cast.
The show will follow the lives of Hispanic teenagers in a Los Angeles high school and touch on the issues this demographic group is confronted with on a daily basis. Director and producer Carlos Portugal said he wants to dispel the negative stereotypes given to Latinos and get rid of the notion that East Los Angeles is plagued by crime and violence.
Way to go!
The series definitely did its research before launching this project, working closely with advocacy groups such as Planned Parenthood, Advocates for Youth, Voto Latino and the California Family Health Council
Bravo Hulu and Portugal for taking a giant step toward the eradication of these stereotypes.
