New study shows Hatha yoga can increase reaction times and better cognitive skills.
In twenty minutes you can take a shower, begin working on a new project at work, drive to your next destination...and you can also improve your brain’s function.
According to a new study, one 20-minute yoga session can improve how the brain works better than moderate to vigorous aerobic exercise.
“Yoga is an ancient Indian science and way of life that includes not only physical movements and postures but also regulated breathing and mediation,” said Neha Gothe, leader of the study in a statement.
The 20-minute yoga practice involves a progression of seated, standing and supine yoga postures. They include isometric contraction and relaxation of different muscle groups and regulated breathing, ending with mediation posture and deep breaths.
The study included 30 individuals who were female undergraduate students at the Exercise Psychology Laboratory at the University of Illinois.
Besides doing yoga, participants also walked or jogged for 20 minutes which led researchers to see the improvement in their reaction times and cognitive tasks after doing yoga. The aerobic exercise showed no significant improvements.
Gothe said yoga involves an active attentional component but its potential benefits have not been fully explored.

President Obama is planning a decade-long project to examine the workings of the human brain. The effort, currently named the Brain Activity Map, will include federal agencies, private foundations and teams of neuroscientists, and is expected to grant greater insights into perception, actions and, ultimately, consciousness. Scientists hope the project will help develop technology essential to understanding diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, as well as find new therapies for a variety of mental illnesses. President Obama hopes the project will be as beneficial as the Human Genome Project which began in 1990 and aimed to map all the genes in human DNA; it cost $3.8 billion, but returned $800 billion by 2010, creating thousands of jobs along the way. He said during his State of the Union address, "Every dollar we invested to map the human genome returned $140 to our economy — every dollar. Today our scientists are mapping the human brain to unlock the answers to Alzheimer’s. They’re developing drugs to regenerate damaged organs, devising new materials to make batteries 10 times more powerful. Now is not the time to gut these job-creating investments in science and innovation.” The new project may be unveiled as early as March and could cost billions of dollars as well. (NY Times)
Women with Heart Disease at Greater Risk for Dementia Problems, Too

Older women with heart disease are three times more likely to go on to develop problems with their thinking skills, according to a new study. Researchers from the Mayo Clinic believe that heart disease affects the general health of the blood vessels which then may affect blood flow to the brain and, subsequently, a woman's problem-solving, language and judgment skills. The problems are associated with certain types of dementia although they do not involve memory loss. "Prevention and management of cardiac disease and vascular risk factors are likely to reduce the risk," said lead author, Dr. Rosebud Roberts. The team evaluated 2,719 people aged between 70 to 89 at the beginning of the study and every 15 months after. (Telegraph)
Researchers Question Link Between Pot Smoking and IQ Drop
Socioeconomic differences cited as cause for flaws in weed smokers' data
Researchers at Duke University last year linked habitual pot smoking in teen years to a long-term drop in IQ. But new analysis is challenging that report, citing differences in participants’ socioeconomic status as the reasons for the variance. In findings published online Monday, the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences say the IQ trend, showing a drop between ages 13 and 38, may have emerged from factors like income, education and occupation. Researcher Ole Rogeberg said he used a computer simulation that mimicked Duke’s study and that there was no way to conclude the IQ drop was caused mostly by marijuana use and not the socioeconomic factors.
