Hackers Attack Twitter, Hit 250,000 Accounts

The Wallstreet Journal and The New York Times were also hit by experienced hackers.

It seems as though no one is safe when it comes to the online community. Twitter confirmed Friday that it has become the latest victim in a number of high-profile cyber-attacks against media companies. Earlier this week, both The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal reported hacks into their computer systems by China-based hackers, likely performed by the Chinese government.

There’s no word on the perpetrators that attacked Twitter but it is reported that user names, email addresses and encrypted passwords belonging to 250,000 users were stolen. Twitter reset the pilfered passwords and sent emails to affected users. Twitter itself wouldn't yield any important secrets, but stolen credentials could be used to eavesdrop on private messages or track Internet addresses a user is posting from. (USA Today)
