Let's Talk: Poverty in the U.S.

Join Loop 21 on Twitter today to discuss the realities of being poor in America

It's almost startling to note the number of people living below the federal poverty line in the United States, one of the wealthiest countries in the world.

Recent statistics reveal some 49 million people in the U.S. are poor, with 1 in 2 people classified as either living in poverty or as low-income. Black Americans are particularly hard hit. The latest unemployment data show that for the month of December, the jobless rate for African Americans ticked up to 14 percent from 13.7 percent in November.

The reasons for pervasive poverty are complex and the efforts to eradicate it in the nation's cities, towns and hamlets are sometimes difficult in and of themselves. But the need is great.

Let's talk about it! Follow Loop 21 on Twitter to join a TweetUp Thursday, Jan. 17 at 6:30 p.m. EST when we'll talk about poverty in the U.S. and how to combat it. The hashtag is #L21Poverty.
