The island wants to change its status
On Tuesday, a majority of Puerto Rican voters opted to make their island the 51st state of America. More than 900,000 voters—54 percent—answered the referendum saying they were not content with the current status and, of those, nearly 800,000—61 percent—chose statehood – the first majority after three previous referendums on the issue over the past 45 years. Citizens of Puerto Rico cannot vote in the U.S. presidential election, but many participated in a referendum on whether to push the territory toward statehood, greater autonomy or independence.
