Camacho critically hurt, police investigating

Hector "Macho" Camacho, the former three-division world champion, was shot in the jaw and critically injured in Bayamon, Puerto Rico, Tuesday night while riding as a passenger in a car. He was hospitalized at Centro Medico in San Juan. The driver of the car was shot and killed.

Bayamon Police are investigating the incident and have one suspect in custody, according to reports in the newspaper Primera Hora.

The 50-year-old Camacho was born in Bayamon, Puerto Rico, but his family moved to Spanish Harlem when he was a child. He is perhaps best known for sending the legendary Sugar Ray Leonard into retirement after their fight in 1997.

The island wants to change its status

On Tuesday, a majority of Puerto Rican voters opted to make their island the 51st state of America. More than 900,000 voters—54 percentanswered the referendum saying they were not content with the current status and, of those, nearly 800,00061 percentchose statehood – the first majority after three previous referendums on the issue over the past 45 years. Citizens of Puerto Rico cannot vote in the U.S. presidential election, but many participated in a referendum on whether to push the territory toward statehood, greater autonomy or independence.
