The Baltimore Ravens took home the Lombardi Trophy Sunday night, giving linebacker Ray Lewis the perfect exit. Lewis announced to his teammates earlier this year that he would retire after Baltimore’s postseason run.
This is Lewis’ second Super Bowl win, following his win against the New York Giants twelve years earlier. The 37-year-old has had some ups and downs over the years, being accused of a double murder outside an Atlanta nightclub and recovering from torn triceps that kept him sidelined since Oct. 14.
His celebratory speech was not only motivational but indicative of the bond he held and continue to hold with his teammates. “It’s simple: When God is for you, who can be against you?” Lewis said, clutching the Lombardi Trophy and looking upward toward the waterfall of silver streamers and confetti. “It’s no greater way, as a champ, to go out on your last ride with the men that I went out with, with my teammates.” (ESPN)
