No More Stop and Frisking in NYC
Judge Shira Scheindlin said it was violating the rights of minorities.
A federal judge has ruled that New York’s stop-and-frisk approach was unconstitutional and violated the rights of its minority citizens. In an attempt to rectify the situation, the judge ordered an independent monitor to oversee any implemented reforms.
Critics believed the policy was centered around racial profiling, given that at least 80 percent of those stop were Latino or black.
The judge’s decision was initially sparked by a lawsuit filed by four black men in New York who said they were stopped without reason.
Do you think police target blacks and Latinos when applying the stop-and-frisk policy?
