Its not enough to build your brand, you must also develop a core audience for your brand. That's exactly what the next Loop21 Tweetup will be addressing. Last week, we discussed what the term 'brand' actually means and great examples of personal branding like Oprah and Sean 'P Diddy' Combs.  

Round two of the TweetUp will discuss the other piece of building a brand. Merriam-Webster’s dictionary defines “brand” as a class of goods identified by name as the product of a single firm. Tahira Wright, publicist and brand strategist of the firm Branded PR, adds that there must be mass appeal and widespread recognition in order for something to be referred to as a brand. People who have developed their personal brand have it easier to attract mass appeal. But then the question is how do you harness that brand and build a large following to support it?

The murder-suicide of the NFL's Jovan Belcher and his girlfriend Kasandra Perkins not only shocked the nation and left many wondering why, it also put the issue of gun control and gun violence back into the nation's spotlight.

Would Belcher, a linebacker for the Kansas City Chiefs, have killed the mother of his 3-month-old daughter if the nation took a tougher line on gun ownership? Or is the onus on the person, not the weapon in his hand?

The issue is complex, as demonstrated in our story Live by the Gun, which offers real talk from real people about the everyday gun violence they face in a gun-ridden neighborhood in the Bronx, New York City.  While violent crime is down in many major cities, in black and brown communities like Chicago, murders are at record numbers.
