Space-Bound Cargo Ship Launches
The Orbital Sciences completed a successful launch of the Cygnus cargo ship on Wednesday.
The brand new, unmanned cargo carrier is on its way to the International Space Station. As the first-ever flight for the Cygnus, it is the second for its Antares booster rocket.
With a liftoff time of 10:58 a.m. from NASA's launch pad at Wallops Island, Virginia, the cheers were aplenty 10 minutes later in the flight control room.
The ship should reach the ISS on Sunday, and NASA has a $1.9 billion contract with Orbital for eight flights total.
"We look forward to the rendezvous with the station on Sunday, and with that we'll have Orbital joining SpaceX as one of our providers," said Robert Lightfoot, NASA Associate Administrator.
