Treatment for Seizures Seized
A new medical procedure to stop epileptic episodes has been brought to the forefront.
Seizures are as common as they are scary, and it is with great technology that the new option to dismiss them has come to fruition so successfully.
The brand new technique is called 'laser ablation,' and it is providing neurosurgeons with a new, not-so-invasive way to put an end to seizures completely.
Three million people suffer from epileptic episodes in the United States alone. In the past, and up until now, open brain surgery and medication were the only routes of treatment.
The new procedure consists of a laser using thermal energy to do away with ill tissue. Surgical teams observe and monitor temperatures via MRI technology.
"By using a non-ionizing radiation source, we are able to deliver heat, kill what you want to destroy, and save what you don't want to," said Dr. Shabbar Danish, director of functional neurosurgery.
